ZEICHENKASKADEN for singer with drum and 4 double bass clarinets is based on texts by Edgar Allen Poe (from the story Bericht des Arthur Gordon Pym), the Mayor of Lampedusa and Helga Utz (freely adapted from a Mongolian song). In this piece, the singer is forced into registers and tempi that push him to the limits of what is possible, in an attempt to tell something that is actually impossible to tell. The double basses provide the framework for this attempt.
